How about some colour to brighten up your day?

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 11. Des 2014

Hair colour doesn't have to be 'natural' tones. For the past few years, hair trends have utilized all colours in the rainbow. Some types are permanent, some wash/fade after a few shampoos, but none are scary, and by all means, you don't have to be 'crazy' to try them! I have many 'conservative' clients with 9-5 jobs within all fields who have been bitten by the colour-bug.

Here are select few who have taken the plunge. The last group of pictures are of a client who didn't like the idea of having to prelighten her hair, so we landed on Great Lengths extentions, blonde and red to create a new look for her. It saves her hair from chemical damage and when she tires of it, all she needs to do is remove them!

Xmas in Florida!

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 3. Des 2014

This holiday season, my family and I will be traveling to my parent's house in Florida for Christmas and New Years. We haven't been home for three years, and by now many of my friends are well aware that I am looking forward to some quality time in my childhood home with friends and family!

Since I will be gone for 3,5 weeks, I have opened my book up each day until our departure to make sure I get in most of my clients before this holiday season. If you cannot find an apt via our online booking, call the salon and ask to speak to me. I am already fully booked on several days, but I will try my best to shuffle my book to satisfy all your hair needs!

And to rub it in, I found a few pictures from Brevard County during the holidays! I have to say that a warm Christmas paired with my mum's traditional Norwegian Christmas Dinner is far better than this minus 5 degree weather!

These are some of my Christmas traditions. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season now matter where you are!

A day in the life of an Adam og Eva Hair Stylist

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 7. Nov 2014

I count myself lucky in life. Lucky in love, lucky with my health, and very lucky in regards to my workplace. It wasn't coincidence that I ended up in the loving arms of the Adam og Eva family, it was my FATE! I am grateful that each day my clients allow me to grow creatively, something that was a rarity back in Florida.

Yesterday my day was filled with inspiration, so I thought perhaps I would share it with you. Hopefully it sparks something within you, a new season, a new you.

Hope you all have a fab weekend.

Mathu Andersen

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 28. Okt 2014

All celebrities have stylists who make them look good on a daily basis, and sometimes it's more than freshening up your make-up and hair, and more about creating an entire persona. Mathu Andersen did it with RuPaul back in the early 1990s, and continues to create incredible images to this day.

Orginally from Sydney, Mathu immigrated to New York in 1986. There he would join forces with Zaldy Goco, and go on to create an influential partnership within the world of fashion and photography. His style is very distinct, yet his clientelle couldn't be more diverse. Throughout the years he has worked with the likes of Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce to name a few, not to mention the elite photographers that are Annie Liebovitz, Francesco Scavullo, Steven Meise, Guzman and many more.
Mathu and RuPaul's friendship has blossomed over the years, and because of this, Mathu is currently Creative Producer of RuPaul's Drag Race, and manages RuPaul's image on the show. (Ie, make-up, clothes, and styling of wigs) In addition to his work on the show, he has been known to hold workshops to help teach others about the splendor that is make-up artistry.

Be Inspired by this Bearded Wonder.

Freshen Up Your Grey?

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 2. Okt 2014

My mum has 'always' been blonde, although in recent years I think the highlights she has had to have to maintain her blonde locks could disprove that she is 'naturally' blonde! Like everyone else, when you age, (whether young or old), your hair changes colour, usually gets darker, then lighter. My mum is now at a point where she has lots of different shades of grey and white, which I personally find to be beautiful in its own right. However, after a long summer full of sunshine, her hair had gone very light, with a brassy tone in her lengths. I decided to take her hair color down a notch, something that could be preceived as her natural hair color.

Color Camo by Redken is marketed as a 'mens' hair color. (mainly because most woman prefer to colour their greys completely) It has been developed for those who wish to keep their white/grey hair at bay while maintaining a natural look. It takes a mere five minutes to process, no longer than a normal shampoo session.

So if you are in doubt as to what to do with your color after a long summer in the sun, perhaps a quick Color Camo is for you...

Did someone mention HATS?

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 30. Sep 2014

I have said it before, and I shall say it again.

I. Love. Hats.

We need more hats in our life, not to mention colour it can add to your wardrobe. And it's not just for the gals, the guys need to embrace the versatile hat. A hat isn't just a method to cover up a bad hair day. They can enhance your fab hair and add that little something to your look.

Next time you look at yourself in the mirror, ask yourself, 'Would a hat make this even cooler?' The answer is more than likely, 'Yes, yes it would.'

HATS 4EVA!

Want Fullness and Body?

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 26. Sep 2014

My wonderful colleague from Nedre Slottsgate Bia Eggum, took the time out of her busy schedule yesterday to come up and teach me how to apply the new GL Apps Tape Extensions from Great Lengths.

My client has worn extensions in various forms for years, and now that she is expecting, wanted something that would be easier for her to maintain. We decided to give tape extensions a go, and the result was better than I had anticipated. The pros of tape vs single strands are many, but for this particular client, the width of the hair extension gave a natural flow to the hair, which in turn blended perfectly within her own.

The end result was one of added fullness and volume, something that most women want desperately! The entire process took half the time of what it normally would have, which of course is an added bonus.

Tape Extensions aren't just for length, or fullness. They can also be used to create an effect with a splashes of color here and there. The options are limitless.

This is Paloma Faith

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 24. Sep 2014

London born Paloma Faith is one of my current fashion inspirations. Not only does she rock ginger and blonde hair dos that I love love love, but more importantly, she uses colour creatively, and isn't afraid to wear a good hat!

In an interview she was once quoted saying, "Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Grace Jones, Bjork and Dita Von Teese; they represent different sides of my fashion personality. To me a great style icon is someone who doesn’t take fashion too seriously, someone prepared to take risks and wear mad things. I love it when clothes look like art. Some of the pieces I wear live look like pieces of sculpture."

Paloma is a wonderful role model. Great voice, down to earth, hilarious sense of humour, and isn't afraid to be different. Check her out, you might like what you see.

Mods vs Rockers 50th Anniversary

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 11. Sep 2014

Our holiday this summer was spent on the tropical Isle of Wight, it was lovely and warm, not exactly what you would expect of 'rainy ol' England.' However, despite the amazing Garlic Festival, the highlight of our trip for me, was definitely our trip to the seaside town of Brighton.

The weekend we were there marked the 50th Anniversary of the clash between the Mods and the Rockers. It was August Bank Holiday Weekend, and the town was full of mods and rockers coming down to the seafront. I have never seen so many Mods in my life! I coined a new term, 'modwatching'. I couldn't get enough of their sharp fashion, hair-dos and of course their decked out scooters!

I have always admired the texturized cuts of the British Mod, and so I present to you my current inspiration: The Mod.

I had to buy myself a pair of brogues of course

Festival Hair

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 9. Aug 2014

Festival Hair is always talked about at the start of any summer. Wavy long, bohemian looks are inevitably in the forefront of the every summer trend, and I am over it. What about the women out there who choose to have short(er) hair? Surely we deserve a bit inspiration for our hair too? Last time I checked, I too want to look my best when out in the sun.

I have worked through most of this years summer, so now it is my turn to enjoy having time off and soaking up some rays. (Although I don't need too much, I prefer my skin one shade darker than blue!) This time next week, my husband and our three year old will be on the Isle of Wight at the 27th Annual Garlic Festival! Kevin and I are avid garlic lovers, Sean Darby on the other hand needs a bit of persuasion. However I am sure garlic ice cream will go down a treat with him!

So here are a few pictures of short hair festival looks for those of you still enjoying time off during these warm summer days! And a few from the Isle of Wight just because...

Go Natural?

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 18. Jul 2014

A friend/client decided to stop colouring her hair a few years back, she said she will eventually colour it again, but for now, she liked the idea of having what her 'mamma gave her.' It got me thinking. I haven't seen my natural colour for the bones of 17 years. (With the exception of when I had a shaved head)

As a colourist I hear a lot of clients wanting to do the same, but they don't have the patience to let it grow out. I also feel that if you highlight the regrowth a little so that the hard line is softened, you will still end up with a regrowth....so what do you do?

The answer is easy. L'Oreal Professional has a semi-permanent hair colour (Dia Light) that colours only previously colourtreated hair! What does that mean for you? It means that you can colour your entire head, including the regrowth, without worry. Your regrowth will remain its natural colour, and the rest will be matched! Easy peasy.

I had 20 mintues to spare today, so I decided to test it out. I am super pleased with the result! I am surprised at how dark I am, but hey, that's me! Dark mysterious gal and all...

Hair Stylists should not be left alone...boredom can be detrimental to a stylists hair, however this time I reckon our collective boredom created a pretty sweet outcome!

My husband said I had Sergeant Stripes, my mother said it reminded her of an old Citroen, but with an extra chevron, my coworker said she thought it looked like a Wi-Fi symbol....

I don't mind either way, I love it.

Feeling the Heat?

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 18. Jul 2014

We are called Adam og Eva for a reason...
We love our male clientelle just as much as we do the gals, so when Gunnar came in last week in dire need of a cut, I was more than happy to help! The poor guy was so hot under all that hair, but was under strict orders from the misses to keep his viking-like beard...

Here he is, trimmed up and ready for the rest of what we hope will be a long warm summer in the land of the midnight sun!

Great Lengths

Ane is getting married in two weeks in Spain, lucky gal! She wanted a few extentions to add volume and fullness to her blonde locks. Orginally she wasn't bothered too much about adding length, however when she saw how great it looked, she decided to keep it! I find myself a tad bit envious of her gorgeous locks...

If you are wondering if you are a good candidate for extentions, call 22 60 32 28 or stop by and ask for me.

Me being up for anything was on it! After 4,5 hours last Thursday, we came up with a warm blonde, medium length shag! She loved it, and I have to say I was pretty pleased too!

Relaxer (Anti-Permanent)

Are you sick of your curls or frizz? Then look no further. A relaxer can make your daily routine hassle free, with no blow drying and straightening. Greta came in today for a touch up on her last relaxer that we did for her back in October. In addition to the relaxer she wanted to get rid of a lot of her length. The after picture is taken with no use of irons, only me blow drying lightly with a brush. At home she will be able to air dry her hair. A true wash and go style!

Are you bored with your cut or colour, but don't want to do anything drastic? Why not try extentions? The use of extentions can dramatically change your look, without having to cut or colour your own hair. For those who know me, know I can't get enough of yellow, so it was a no brainer when deciding on which colour I wanted. If I were to colour my hair with a 'crazy colour' it would fade quickly, so by using the extentions, there is more of a guarantee that the colour won't fade. Kjell Rune placed 8 Great Lengths strands to my disconnected cut and the result is fun and edgy, and the great part is it only took 15 minutes! And

My gal Charlotte is off to Shanghai for three months, and had to have her locks in order before she leaves for an adventure of a lifetime! Last time we coloured her hair I gave her a vibrant copper/gold, however this time we toned it down since she won't have her trusted colourist by her side. Here she is in all her glory, rockin some pretty awesome golden copper curls!

Ps
HOT TIP!
Charlotte loves to use Redken for Men Work Hard on her curls. Applied in towel dried hair and left to dry on it's own, or with a dryer, this is the result. I have to say I agree, her curls look great! No frizz and lots of definition.

Mode Anglais

In the wake of my favourite football team, (Liverpool FC) winning a MASSIVE game yesterday, I couldn't help but see what people are getting up to Merseyside.

Besides Liverpool FC closing in for the League Title, thousands of ladies attended the Grand National Ladies Day at the Aintree Races. What I love about the Brits is their love of hats and fascinators! There are so many, everything from the elegant to downright ridiculous. But they don't care, they still flaunt their stuff like they are on the Red Carpet at a Hollywood Premiere! I wore a fascinator for my wedding, and everyone loved it, homemade and all. Perhaps I should bring the style to Oslo?

I also found some great shots of regular gals on the streets of Liverpool. I admire catwalk designs as much as the next, however most of the time, I believe that fashion is on the streets, it's what YOU make of it. There are no rules, stripes and flowers together? Why yes! Why not!?

Next time you are headed to London for a shopping spree, think again. There is a secret gem in Liverpool. Streets upon streets filled with shops, and when I was there, I felt it was the perfect size for me not to feel overwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, I love London, but Liverpool just has something it doesn't. Check out Liverpool 1, it's massive! So many shops, restaurants, you name it. And from Oslo you are there in under 2 hours!

Stanley Chow

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 13. Apr 2014

Perusing the web last night, I stumbled upon Manchester artist Stanley Chow. The more I researched, I realized I had seen his work before, (ie White Stripes artwork). I was actually looking for footballer hairstyles, which lead me to his illustrated images of his personal favourites. Being from Manchester, he is hardcore Man United, and thus many of the portraits are of current and former players.

He has a very clever way of capturing facial details in a simplistic manner, making recognition of the individual easy. Sometimes simple things are the best.

Here a few of my favourites, see if you can figure out who they all are...

Fashion Without Borders

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 2. Apr 2014

When I was younger I must admit I wanted to be an actress, but I never pursued it because I felt there were no women (or men) with disabilites in the business. At least none who could be a visible role model. I later found out that the coroner in CSI Las Vegas, played by Robert David Hall, is a double amputee and has advocated for disabled actors within the Screen Actors Guild, the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists, and Actors Equity. A study showed that 19% of Americans are disabled, yet only 0,5% of the words spoken on film and television come from disabled characters!

Being that I am the 'One Legged Viking Queen,' I love that there are people within the fashion industry who feel it is high time to include EVERYONE, not just plus size models, but people of all shapes and sizes, with limbs or without. So when my coworker showed me what our Russian commrades did on Sunday, I was thrilled.

'The initiative, called 'Models without borders' is aimed at increasing awareness of disability in the fashion industry and is part of a four-day fashion event in Moscow that features over 30 designers.'

Kate Bush

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 31. Mar 2014

I was overwhelmed with joy when Kate Bush announced she would be performing live for the first time in 35 years. Fifteen dates at the Apollo in London....surely I would get a ticket? When the pre-sale tickets sold out in 30 minutes, she added even more dates . Between August 26 - October 1, thousands of lucky fans will see the lengend that is Kate Bush, sing all of their favourites live. I attempted to grab two tickets on Friday when the official sales started at 9.30....I had my hands on two tickets, but at 850 pounds, I couldn't go ahead with it.

When I saw this article, I had to laugh, as I can sooo relate to it. It is the ' No Kate Bush ticket scale of sadness...'

1) Quite Sad 2) Pretty Sad 3) Definitely Sad 4) Really Sad 5) Very Sad 6) Devastated....

I am pretty sure I fall under number 6.....however bookies in England are predicting that she will tour, so perhaps I should stop being so dramatic. Yeah...no.

So to Cheer me up, I found Noel Fielding's Wuthering Heights....

Gareth Pugh

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 27. Mar 2014

Once I started researching individuals who inspire me, I found that many of them were linked to eachother by fashion designer Gareth Pugh. He, like many of the greats, studied at Central Saint Martins in London and made his solo debut at London's Fashion week in the fall of 2006.

At the young age of 33, he has worked with many big names in the business. Daphne Guinness, Kylie Minogue, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and my favourite, Roisin Murphy, just to name a few. Roisin dares to wear his avant garde creations, and names him as her favourite designer. I admire her for her courage to wear his clothing ,head held high. I wish there were more individuals out there who did. Without people like the aforementioned who support artists like Gareth, I dare to think what bland and colourless world we would live in.....

So here are a few images of some favourite celebrities wearing Gareth's creations. I am pretty sure you will have seen them before, but now you know the face behind the magicial pieces.

Daphne

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 26. Mar 2014

For those who follow fashion, Daphne Guinness may be *old news*, but for those who do not know who she is, she is the inspiration for Lady Gaga, and muse to the top fashion designers of our day. Her best friends were Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow, both amazing in their own right.

Daphne is an heir by direct decent of Arthur Guinness. (This little fact I find funny as the only tattoo my husband has ever considered is '1759', the year in which Guinness was first brewed. Did I mention my husband is Irish and loves Guinness?)

Daphne dabbles in anything and everything. Music, art, modeling, acting. However, it's her designs that I love. When she can't find exactly what she wants, she makes it. Jewels, clothes, even perfume.

So here she is. Love it or leave it.

Beauty in the abnormal.

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 7. Mar 2014

For those close to me, it comes as no shock when I say I am an amputee. Quite proud of it in fact. My husband calls me his Spiderwoman, Our tiny apartment is is full of prosthetic limbs, most of them alarmingly realistic. The need for a limb that looks 'normal' has been a priority when making a new leg.

Rune Nilsen at Sophie's Minde Ortopedi has long been my main 'leg' man, and with the help of some skilled artist's at Dorset Orthopaedic, I have some pretty amazing legs. That being said, perhaps having a prosthetic that looks real is old news?

Viktoria Modesta seems to think so. With the help of Sophie de Oliveira Barata at the Alternative Limb Project, she has created extraordinary prosthetics. If People are going to stare, why not give them something unique to look at?

So all I have to say is, watch this Space...you never know, when I want something, I usually get my way...

Ine Hoem

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 5. Mar 2014

For those who know me, can testify to the fact that music is beyond important to me. Next to my family, it is what inspires me, lifts me up when I am down, or perhaps keeps me low when I want to be there.

My colleague Solveig is the same. She is a festival junkie and goes to any concert she can. She recently saw Ine Hoem play at by:Larm, a festival dedicated to artists on the verge of success here in Norway or Internationally. Put it to you lightly, what she saw, she liked, and upon coming back to the salon a few days later, she put Ine's music on Spotify for all of us to hear.

To my delight, I loved it. More than loved it. My toes were tapping, arms swaying...(which isn't perhaps the best thing to do whilst you are trying to do someone's hair) nonetheless it was great. Here is the irony, Ine is my third cousin. Am I biased because of our familiar ties? No. We have never met. Her brother and father I know well, but our lives have yet to cross. I hope we do someday.

Until then, I shall listen to her voice and enjoy the positive energy that her fills her music.

Check her out at by:Larm's page why don't you?

The Ever Changing Kelly

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 27. Feb 2014

When I was a senior in High School, The Osbournes took over.

Everyone I knew watched the crazy family, it was like being a fly on the wall in an insane asylum! I was hooked, it was my guilty pleasure.

Kelly was the chubby goth girl that I could relate to, I too, was a chubby goth girl...
Since then, we have both abandoned the goth look, (although I am still one at heart).

She has embraced many different looks, as I have, and she has rocked each one.

She inspires me because she isn't afraid of colour. In a world where 'normal' looking, (or as comedian Billy Connolly would call 'beige') , it's refreshing to see someone use all shades of the colour wheel, be it through her clothes or hair.

Yellow Inspiration

I'm missing my vibrant hair colour...

After searching the web, (my favourite spot, Pinterest) I found a few looks that are definitly my style.

Brig Van Osten (known for Shear Genius), rocks bright yellow in a classic way with soft locks. (Near bottom)

Or perhaps just a peek-a-boo of colour is enough?? The all over black with a few blocks of colour is an easy way to try something 'crazy' without going all out.

Are you the daring type? Call Bislett and ask for Berit, I am waiting...

Horst Rechelbacher 1941-2014

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 16. Feb 2014

The man who changed my life as a stylist has left his shell to cancer. If you don´t know who he is, he founded Aveda in 1978.

Horst wasn´t just another founder of a beauty line. He was an environmentalist, author, creative artist, and leder who would go on to change the way the beauty industry looked and worked through his commitment to the development of sustainable, and eco-friendly consumer products.

Horst was the first to sign the Valdez Principles, now Ceres Principles, after the Exxon Valdez Oil spill in 1992, which joined corporate environmental responsibility with corporate bottom line. His conscience for environment was a drive factor for him.

Whilst at Aveda he introduced an industry first, an aerosol hairspray with net-zero effect on the Earth´s climate with an award winning low 35% VOC formula. In addition to this Aveda helps fund wind turbines and uses renewable energy to run their factories, as well as ties with tribes in Brazil to help replant and grow uruku where deforestation has been a factor.

He sold Aveda in 2003 and remained on the board for a few years. After a while he became concerned that the industry had stagnated and wasn´t utilizing new technologies that would be better for consumers and the product. So with that, he created Intelligent Nutrients, (IN).

http://www.intelligentnutrients.com/

´IN is a certified organic, food-grade, non-toxic plant-based hair, skin, body, aroma and lifestyle company with the primary emphasis on using organically grown ingredients´

I could go on and on about this man. For me, he was a true inspiration and is everything a true innovative business person should be. His legacy will go on through the companies he has founded and through the lives he has touched. I might not be ´there´ yet, but I will get back to my roots soon. One step at a time.
