Mathu Andersen

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 28. Okt 2014

All celebrities have stylists who make them look good on a daily basis, and sometimes it's more than freshening up your make-up and hair, and more about creating an entire persona. Mathu Andersen did it with RuPaul back in the early 1990s, and continues to create incredible images to this day.

Orginally from Sydney, Mathu immigrated to New York in 1986. There he would join forces with Zaldy Goco, and go on to create an influential partnership within the world of fashion and photography. His style is very distinct, yet his clientelle couldn't be more diverse. Throughout the years he has worked with the likes of Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce to name a few, not to mention the elite photographers that are Annie Liebovitz, Francesco Scavullo, Steven Meise, Guzman and many more.
Mathu and RuPaul's friendship has blossomed over the years, and because of this, Mathu is currently Creative Producer of RuPaul's Drag Race, and manages RuPaul's image on the show. (Ie, make-up, clothes, and styling of wigs) In addition to his work on the show, he has been known to hold workshops to help teach others about the splendor that is make-up artistry.

Be Inspired by this Bearded Wonder.

This is Paloma Faith

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 24. Sep 2014

London born Paloma Faith is one of my current fashion inspirations. Not only does she rock ginger and blonde hair dos that I love love love, but more importantly, she uses colour creatively, and isn't afraid to wear a good hat!

In an interview she was once quoted saying, "Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Grace Jones, Bjork and Dita Von Teese; they represent different sides of my fashion personality. To me a great style icon is someone who doesn’t take fashion too seriously, someone prepared to take risks and wear mad things. I love it when clothes look like art. Some of the pieces I wear live look like pieces of sculpture."

Paloma is a wonderful role model. Great voice, down to earth, hilarious sense of humour, and isn't afraid to be different. Check her out, you might like what you see.

Fashion Without Borders

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 2. Apr 2014

When I was younger I must admit I wanted to be an actress, but I never pursued it because I felt there were no women (or men) with disabilites in the business. At least none who could be a visible role model. I later found out that the coroner in CSI Las Vegas, played by Robert David Hall, is a double amputee and has advocated for disabled actors within the Screen Actors Guild, the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists, and Actors Equity. A study showed that 19% of Americans are disabled, yet only 0,5% of the words spoken on film and television come from disabled characters!

Being that I am the 'One Legged Viking Queen,' I love that there are people within the fashion industry who feel it is high time to include EVERYONE, not just plus size models, but people of all shapes and sizes, with limbs or without. So when my coworker showed me what our Russian commrades did on Sunday, I was thrilled.

'The initiative, called 'Models without borders' is aimed at increasing awareness of disability in the fashion industry and is part of a four-day fashion event in Moscow that features over 30 designers.'

In addition here in Norway, Oslo City, one of the city's largest shopping malls, used handicapped people in a 2012 add campaign called 'Ingen Grenser' (No Boundaries).

Gareth Pugh

Postet av Berit Torkildsen den 27. Mar 2014

Once I started researching individuals who inspire me, I found that many of them were linked to eachother by fashion designer Gareth Pugh. He, like many of the greats, studied at Central Saint Martins in London and made his solo debut at London's Fashion week in the fall of 2006.

At the young age of 33, he has worked with many big names in the business. Daphne Guinness, Kylie Minogue, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and my favourite, Roisin Murphy, just to name a few. Roisin dares to wear his avant garde creations, and names him as her favourite designer. I admire her for her courage to wear his clothing ,head held high. I wish there were more individuals out there who did. Without people like the aforementioned who support artists like Gareth, I dare to think what bland and colourless world we would live in.....

So here are a few images of some favourite celebrities wearing Gareth's creations. I am pretty sure you will have seen them before, but now you know the face behind the magicial pieces.

Daphne

For those who follow fashion, Daphne Guinness may be *old news*, but for those who do not know who she is, she is the inspiration for Lady Gaga, and muse to the top fashion designers of our day. Her best friends were Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow, both amazing in their own right.

Daphne is an heir by direct decent of Arthur Guinness. (This little fact I find funny as the only tattoo my husband has ever considered is '1759', the year in which Guinness was first brewed. Did I mention my husband is Irish and loves Guinness?)

Daphne dabbles in anything and everything. Music, art, modeling, acting. However, it's her designs that I love. When she can't find exactly what she wants, she makes it. Jewels, clothes, even perfume.

So here she is. Love it or leave it.
